Wedding Cake

The wedding cake can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be.
wedding cakeThe wedding cake is so pretty that you hate to cut into it and eat it! Photos of the wedding cakes are often taken so you can capture that beauty forever. There are so many choices in cakes and the fillings that go into them. It is more than just having a white cake with white frosting now. Wedding cakes are more creative now and can range from the traditional white to having a bridge or a fountain around it! Often cakes can be embellished with pearls, flowers, or other decorations. It can match the color of the wedding dress or even be a light pastel colored cake.

The flavors come in the traditional white or yellow cake, chocolate, hazelnut, double chocolate, Italian rum, vanilla, lemon, orange, spice, carrot, cheesecake, chiffon, fruitcake, banana, Black Forest, cherry, and the list goes on. Skies the limit on what type of cake you can have! It is a good idea to go and taste a variety of cakes from the baker of your choice. If that is not feasible, let your baker know the dinner menu and they can make recommendations on what type of cake to have as a dessert.

The important thing is that you want to compliment the meal with the wedding cake flavor. Sometimes cakes can also be served with a sort of topping such as ice cream or a sorbet, fresh fruit or fruit sauce or even chocolate. For the top of the cake or cake topper, you can have a variety of different bride and groom toppers that may to chosen to resemble the bride and groom. But you don't have to have the couple on the top, but rather have edible flowers, which makes for a very lovely presentation.

You should talk and select a baker as soon as possible. The best way to find a baker is by recommendation. If you don't have a friend or acquaintance who can recommend one, you may have to do more footwork and initial interview to find one. Here are some things you may want to address with the baker at your meeting:

  • The size of the wedding cake: You should have a good idea of the amount of wedding guests to feed so you can order the appropriate size cake.

  • The flavor, filling and icing: You'll be given a list to select from, if the flavor is not on the list that you desire, ask the baker to see if they can acommodate you.

You also want to ask the baker what their specialty cakes are and if you are able to sample it. Also as a contingency or backup plan, you need to find out if they will have another cake for you in the unfortunate event something happens to your cake. This is hard to think of but important to have, just in case. Remember to try and stay within your budgetted amount for the wedding cake costs. Delivery costs is usually included in the pricing but if you fall outside of a certain mile radius from the bakery, they may charge extra for that. Again, make sure you have a contract with all the terms and agreements in writing.

The baker should arrive at the reception in time to setup the cake before you and your guests arrive.
